Lost in the Stacks

Danielle at A Work In Progress has asked me to take part in her Lost In The Stacks series, as I love looking at other peoples bookshelves almost as much as I love talking about my own books I was entirely chuffed by this invitation - so just in case you don't get enough of me here please go and have a look over there.

In this picture (it's actually quite odd to see images of my flat on someone else's blog, though I'm not quite sure why that should be?) you can just make out two paintings by one of my favourite artists Ruth Brownlee I think her work is extraordinary and long for more of it (in the event of fire or flood it's the paintings I'd grab, not books) she really is worth looking up (and buying from whilst she's still affordable) so I'm quite pleased to have sneaked these in even if they are hard to see.

  1. A really lovely interview and set of shelf photos, Hayley! And I also found it very odd to see my room online... (although not as weird as the time I found my room by accident on an estate agent's website.)

    1. That would be extremely disconcerting, I'm sure it must contravene some sort of data protection act as well. Cheeky estate agent.

  2. A great interview! I do love browsing other people's shelves, even virtually. And I agree with you about Miss Marjoribanks, everyone I've recommended it to has loved it (though I think The Perpetual Curate is my favorite of the Chronicles).

    1. I particularly like 'Phoebe Junior' partly for the way Oliphant talks about Trollope in it. The Perpetual Curate is excellent as well - really I like the whole series but chose Miss Marjoribanks because she's the easiest to find. It's almost a crime that the rest of them are out of print.

  3. I love your comment about books charting one's life and enthusiasms, and thus being so hard to discard - I am totally in sympathy with that. I really enjoyed looking at your shelves, Hayley.

  4. Thank you Vicki. It's sunny here this morning and I'm sitting with a coffee looking at a bookshelf - something that always makes me so happy! I couldn't be more content and wouldn't feel at home without those books. Sometimes I think I'm a bit to attached to them but it's not a very vicious vice so I don't worry about it for long.

  5. I do love that series of Danielle's and thoroughly enjoy poking around other people's book collections. Yours is impressive! And I too started and never finished 'Cecelia'. We can't be alone, maybe we should start a club.

Like Vicki, I am in sympathy with books charting one's life, I hang on to many for that reason, even though I'm unlikely to reread them.
