On the evidence of 2 books read she's brilliant. In this one I love the way she's neatly subverted a typical sort of mills and boon set up to provide a romance (complete with wonderfully clipped 1940's diologue ) but also something that makes the reader question there own prejudices (well I questioned mine anyway) . The 11 year gap Renault goes for and the respective ages of 24 & 35 are well judged. Enough to know it would certainly raise eyebrows and invite comment but also ages when those 11 years really tell in the relative gap in experience. That Hilary has an established and responsible career is interesting too, neatly underlines all sorts of double standards. That's almost there, really. ;-) I confess that although I studied classics, I've never read any of Renault's ancient themed novels, and really that is a terribly omission as I'm told they are rather good. skiourophilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08200877834536477400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-50135874865238224852014-08-27T16:58:27.688+01:002014-08-27T16:58:27.688+01:00This sounds very interesting. It was a family scandal at the time (1950s). I have to read Return to Night. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!Debbie Rodgershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15630059470408161434noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-76963156878270366932014-08-27T11:00:55.967+01:002014-08-27T11:00:55.967+01:00I really want to read this one now.
