It's interesting watching her grow up as she faces humiliations and adversity. I think the age difference between Elizabeth and Charlotte perhaps explains why she doesn't understand Charlotte's reasons for marrying, especially when she gets so much male attention and is young enough to take it for granted that an acceptable husband will turn up. Quite frighteningly man mad - so much for decorum and modesty. Did you find it the same book that you remembered or where there surprises in there for you?Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-33136555747269020902013-01-07T21:53:49.579+00:002013-01-07T21:53:49.579+00:00I agree he's quite sinister, I saw him as a pr...I agree he's quite sinister, I saw him as a predator, but parasite is perhaps more appropriate. He's certainly a nuisance. I have always had great sympathy for Charlotte and reading the scene between her and Elizabeth when they are talking about Jane and how a woman needs to show "more affection than she feels", I was struck by how little Elizabeth understands her friend. It is one thing to misunderstand Darcy's character (after all, she hardly knows him) but what of Charlotte, who she has known all her life?Claire (The Captive Reader)https://www.blogger.com/profile/07430380065718826213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-51446943117968617212013-01-06T22:26:39.518+00:002013-01-06T22:26:39.518+00:00Enjoyed reading your thoughts on P&P. He becomes a bit more sinister when you consider him as twenty or thirty year financial burden and troublemaker.Alex in Leedshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03581135303575274237noreply@blogger.com
