Because the tun up to Christmas is crazy busy for me, I find the slow dark weeks of January and February a neccesary and welcome chance to slow down a bit and retreat into books and films and the comfort of home. But the Scotts also know that the end of January is a good time to have a celebration like Burns night or Up-Helly-Aa in my native Shetland, the latter specifically celebrates the light returning and provides post Christmas focus and excitement. Generally though work pays no attention to the rhythemnof the seasons, and having those constraints placed on you can make it really difficult to cope. I definitely want to read more of Clare's books, so far they have been interesting!Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-87405344354325537382018-11-16T10:10:43.929+00:002018-11-16T10:10:43.929+00:00I keep meaning to read Horatio Clare, his writing ...I keep meaning to read Horatio Clare, his writing sounds interesting. I find winter falls into two parts: late autumn and the weeks up until the holidays, which are generally enjoyable and cosy, and then the bleak weeks of January and February, when Belgium in particular is just one mass of grey sunlessness. I have to save up all my comfort reading for then...helenhttp://gallimaufry.typepad.com/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-29395086075700959992018-11-13T09:54:47.320+00:002018-11-13T09:54:47.320+00:00Thank you! My iPad and I are both getting older, I'm better at picking up it's mistakes than my own, and getting ever worse at reading back over what I've written. Perhaps a new years resolution in the making there. Clare is a fantastic writer, 'Orison for a Curlew' is my favourite of his books so far. He's well worth looking out for. I have seen the Coorie book, but not bought it yet. Maybe in January! The town you mention is Hebden Bridge. And there is an apostrophe missing in mother's sheep. It doesn't depress me but I know the lack of light can have a quite debilitating affect for some. Seems like Clare might be one. I love reading journals so this one is now on my wish list. Talking about enjoying the cosy, have you seen The Art of Coorie: How to Live Happy the Scottish Way by Gabriella Bennett ... you might enjoy it.
