I love her kindness towards Mr Fortune, who could have been so many negative things, but isn't.Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-65601047233364565002019-07-12T11:10:21.760+01:002019-07-12T11:10:21.760+01:00Lovely review, Hayley. I read it such a long time ago - I remember liking it (though Lolly Willowes is unequalled among her novels, for me).Simon T (StuckinaBook)http://www.stuckinabook.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-11936470899757305552019-07-11T12:53:43.349+01:002019-07-11T12:53:43.349+01:00I didn't much like the cover either, but it...I didn't much like the cover either, but it's a brilliant book. She has interesting views on colonialism and the idea of the white saviour too, especially for 1927. It's everything I love about women's writing.Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-17880817476518338932019-07-11T12:50:21.876+01:002019-07-11T12:50:21.876+01:00You have, first by getting interested in her fairy...You have, first by getting interested in her fairy stories, and then by organising this. It's a total vindication of my book hoarding habits as well. I'm really looking forward to reading more by her.Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-17848444070135831952019-07-11T12:48:45.056+01:002019-07-11T12:48:45.056+01:00It's very hard to discuss without spoilers, an...It's very hard to discuss without spoilers, and because it's not a particularly well known book spoilers feel wrong. I loved the ending, which for me felt true, brave, Dad, and maybe a little bit hopeful. I'll try Lolly Willows again.Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-64194324963392465862019-07-09T21:47:39.454+01:002019-07-09T21:47:39.454+01:00Don't feel stupid, at least you've picked ...Don't feel stupid, at least you've picked it up and read it. I've passed over this book so many times at second-hand shops because I didn't like the title....now that's stupid! Next time I spot a copy I'll buy it. Excellent review, I am never quite sure whether I've read this or just imagined reading it but you make me very keen to track it down. I think you have a lot of pleasure ahead, I haven't yet met an STW book I didn't enjoy.helenhttps://gallimaufry.typepad.com/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-8411563246645258642019-07-08T01:56:04.465+01:002019-07-08T01:56:04.465+01:00A very nice review! You succeeded nicely. I also liked "Lolly Willowes" and found a way to review it. It's a strange book, though. BookTapestryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13808126395322513413noreply@blogger.com
