The heroine was the most annoying heroine since the "Twilight" saga (which I also regret reading...I hope never to succumb to popular pressure again!) I'll have to check this book out. It sounds like Sutherland does for books what Bryson does for so many other things (primarily the English Language). Thanks for the review.Bev Sykeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16794928133704720689noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-708686632568745442014-06-10T22:14:16.929+01:002014-06-10T22:14:16.929+01:00I'm with your mother on that, this is the sort...I'm with your mother on that, this is the sort of book about books I can cope with - it's been stealthily educating me whilst making me laugh. Often when I read literary criticism (which isn't often really) I end up shouting at the book which is ultimately unproductive. Regarding the GCSE thing (I think I was in the second year to sit them) I find it curious that so many teachers defend it's place on the syllabus because they 'enjoy teaching it'c- far more than they enjoyed studying it in the case of my English teacher friend. It's not a bad reason to have a book on the syllabus but I'm not sure it's the best reason either. My mother is a BIG fan of John Sutherland's.

As for the dust-up over English GCSEs, I think I mentioned before my hatred of 'Of Mice and Men', so I for one am grateful that the next generation will be spared... And you know, I was in the first year of children to sit GCSEs, I am a bit surprised that 'Of Mice and Men' has been forced down innocent pupils' throats for quite so many years, about time for a change.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8011557877105021955.post-1574443994979195622014-06-09T14:00:34.464+01:002014-06-09T14:00:34.464+01:00Ooh, sounds good...I only have Sutherland's &q...Ooh, sounds good...I only have Sutherland's " Was Heathcliff a Murderer."
